Customer Critiques

I had high hopes for this unit, but I will tell you up front, I have sent it back. Very first I'll tell you why I bought it, and then what didn't work nicely.
I had to replace the current failed in dash double din unit on my wife's SUV that had, amongst other functions: Radio, CD, DVD, iPod interface, Nav and Bluetooth phone interface. The specifications for the new unit as dictated by my wife, in order of significance were: 1. Bluetooth, 2.Nav, 3. Radio. If it couldn't do those three things, forget it. If it could, everything else was gravy.
I scoured the net and shops for quite a few hours. From all the units that met my wife's needs, I picked out the Pyle PLDD75BG mainly mainly because of the nice big 7 inch screen and reasonable value (compared to Pioneer and Sony at least). This unit is fairly new, and I couldn't locate one review (very good or poor) on the net. I decided to take a chance and purchased it anyway. Due to my experience, I'm writing this critique.
The installation of the unit was typical, but soon after that, troubles instantly arose. 1st, on the Nav, there were for some cause, no Points of Interest (POIs) anywhere near my home. For instance, the nearest gas station was 100 miles away. Now I live in the Los Angeles location and think me, there are lots of gas stations by my residence. To make a extended story short, I figured out that the POI file on the SD card was missing a file for POIs in Southern California. Apparently, California has so many POIs, that the POI file for California is divided into POI1 and POI2. POI2 has the Southern California POIs and was missing from the SD card for some reason. I Googled and identified a place on the web that has "repair" files for Nav systems, downloaded the Cal POI2 file, and this glitch was fixed. I almost certainly could/need to have gotten it from the manufacturer, but I am as well impatient to wait for them to figure it out.
The next issue that arose, is that unless you are in Nav mode, no screen, like the radio interface, displays the time of day, i.e. the clock. This is crazy. I in no way seen a unit of this kind that didn't display the clock in most modes, and specifically the radio mode. There is even a clock adjustment in the settings menu, but no way to display the clock anyplace except in the Nav screens. This drove my wife nuts considering that her default display is the radio. She only utilizes the Nav when necessary.
The last issue (and the straw that broke the camel's back and forced me to return the unit) was the bluetooth. While we could hear callers fine, the callers could barely hear us over interference and background noise. The greatest, and barely intelligible sound came with the auto parked, engine off, A/C off and windows rolled up. Something else, and the bluetooth was useless.
We named both the seller and Pyle tech assistance. They believed it could be the telephone, but we attempted quite a few phones, including a brand new iPhone 4 and Android, which all worked flawlessly on the OEM bluetooth in my Acura TL, but none of which worked nicely with the Pyle. I believe that the difference is that low finish models such as this Pyle use a bluetooth "headset" protocol, though far more costly units (like the Pioneer I ultimately ended up replacing this unit with) use the bluetooth "Handsfree" protocol. I noticed that all of the test phones reported a "headset" connection with the Pyle and a "Handsfree" connection with the Acura and Pioneer. It also helps to have a separate microphone (which each the Pioneer and my Acura have) that you can locate away from A/C vents and the head unit whose cooling fan generates lots of noise. Even so, I will say that the failed unit I had hoped to replace the Pyle with, had the same sort of built in microphone and it worked a lot superior than this unit, although not as well as the units with a separate microphone. I advise that if a bluetooth phone interface is important to you, you go with a unit that has a separate microphone.
I will say this, I liked the Nav unit a lot. It worked rapidly and had a good interface. The 7 inch screen was wonderful and had really good clarity. The sound on the unit wasn't negative either. I by no means got about to testing the iPod interface. If you don't need a bluetooth telephone connection and don't thoughts that the clock does not display except in Nav mode, this is not a bad unit. But a similar unit without having the bluetooth would possibly be less costly, so it in all probability does not make sense to get this unit if you do not want bluetooth.

I found the unit can not go from gps to radio. I had to turn off the unit totally and turn it on ahead of going back to the radio. That is a bummer. The instructions says to hit the src button but does not perform. I tried each button and nothing operates except shutting down.
Shortly right after, the screen has fuzzy picture immediately after installing the unit. I am not sure how extended the screen will final.
Also there is no clock on the screen other than the gps screen.
Other than that, the attributes function okay for the price.
